My name is Motshabi Mthembu, and my journey into the mining and construction industry was fueled by a deep-seated love for manufacturing. This journey has been characterised by determination, resilience, and a passion for inspiring other women in a traditionally male-dominated field.
Early Career and Education
I began my professional journey in 2017, initially venturing into the world of lifestyle public relations (PR). However, by 2018, I realised that my true calling lay elsewhere. I sought something more challenging and fulfilling, which led me to the fascinating world of yellow metal. My educational background includes two qualifications: one in Marketing and another in Business Management. Currently, I am furthering my education by pursuing an Honours degree in Marketing Management.
Professional Journey and Leadership Development
My first role in the mining industry was as a Public Relations Officer, a position that marked a significant turning point in my career. This role introduced me to the intricacies of the industry and offered me the opportunity to develop my leadership skills. A pivotal moment was working under a boss who, instead of micromanaging, provided me with the freedom to explore and enhance my craft. This experience laid the foundation for my leadership journey, teaching me the value of autonomy and trust in a professional setting.
One of the most challenging yet rewarding projects I undertook was the profiling of a new mining machine. This project required me to be on the mining site from dawn till dusk, capturing and editing footage to create a compelling short film. The process was grueling, but it demonstrated that with hard work and dedication, any goal is achievable. My story is a testament to perseverance, as I overcame the setback of failing Grade 10 to obtain two qualifications and secure a position at one of the largest global companies.

Achievements and Impact
My influence extends beyond the workplace, with a social media following of 60,000 on TikTok. I regularly share business insights to empower women in my community. My journey is not just about personal success but also about paving the way for others. I actively contribute to fostering diversity and inclusion, reminding the industry that women are equally capable of excelling.
Challenges and Overcoming Barriers
The challenges I have faced as a woman in mining and construction are numerous. I have had to assert my competence in a predominantly male environment, proving that I am equally capable of excelling in this industry. This assertion is not merely verbal; it is demonstrated through consistently meeting and exceeding my deliverables. By doing so, I aim to shatter the preconceived notions that women are less suited for these roles.

Inspiration and Advice
Throughout my career, I have drawn inspiration from various mentors and role models who have guided me. Their influence has been instrumental in shaping my leadership style and approach. Young women aspiring to enter the mining and construction industry, my advice is simple: believe in yourself and your capabilities. The path may be challenging, but with determination and hard work, you can achieve remarkable success.
Future Goals and Personal Philosophy
My goal is to continue growing as a leader and to inspire more women to join and thrive in the mining and construction industry. My core values of perseverance, dedication, and empowerment guide my decisions and actions. Staying motivated in a demanding industry involves continuously setting new goals and striving to exceed expectations.
